How to plan a wake at a local pub

How to plan a wake at a local pub

Arranging a funeral is hard, and it often happens quickly. The wake, the gathering after the service, is where people share stories and look after each other. Holding it at a local pub can make it feel familiar and relaxed, especially if it was somewhere the person loved. Here’s what to think about.

1. Book the room as soon as you have a date

Most funerals take place within two or three weeks, so call the venue as soon as the date and time are set. A good pub will hold the room for you and confirm the details later. At the Dog & Donkey, a phone call to 01395 904595 is all it takes.

2. Estimate numbers, not exact ones

You won’t know exactly who is coming, and that’s fine. Give the venue a rough range. Our function room holds up to 100 guests.

3. Think about timing

Tell the venue when the service ends and how long it takes to travel. If you give us your funeral director’s details we’ll confirm timings with them, so the room is warm and ready when the first guests arrive.

4. Keep the food simple

Most families choose a spread of lighter bites so people can mingle, or a simple sit-down meal for a smaller group. Mention dietary needs early. See our function food options.

5. Decide how to handle drinks

Some families run a tab up to a set amount, others offer a welcome drink and then guests buy their own. Either is completely normal.

6. Add personal touches

  • A table of photos, or a slideshow if the venue has a screen
  • An order of service and a memory book for messages
  • A playlist of their favourite songs
  • Their favourite drink behind the bar

7. Think about older guests

Parking close to the door, accessible rooms and somewhere comfortable to sit all matter. We have on-site parking and accessible rooms.
